Gears of War: E-Day: release date, editions, and what the beta showed

The chainsaw is back on 6 October. Here is everything confirmed about the Gears prequel: the platforms, every edition and price, the early-access dates, and what two beta weekends told us about Horde Siege.

Gears of War: E-Day: release date, editions, and what the beta showed
TL;DR

Gears of War: E-Day launches 6 October 2026 on Xbox Series X and S and PC (including Steam), day one on Game Pass, with no PlayStation version. It is a prequel set on Emergence Day, following a young Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago as the Locust first erupt. The Standard edition is $69.99, Premium is $99.99 and a physical Collector's edition is $299.99; Premium and Collector's buyers play up to five days early, from 1 October. Two beta weekends in August put the spotlight on Horde Siege, a bigger 12-player take on the series' co-op survival mode, which is shaping up as the highlight.

After years of teasing, Gears of War is back with a story it has always circled but never told. Announced with a fresh trailer at Gamescom Opening Night Live on 25 August, Gears of War: E-Day locks a release date of 6 October 2026 and takes the series back to its darkest day. Here is what is actually confirmed.

The setup: a prequel to Emergence Day

E-Day is a prequel, set fourteen years before the original 2006 game, on "Emergence Day" itself, the moment the Locust Horde first burst from beneath the planet Sera and broke the world. You play a younger Marcus Fenix alongside Dom Santiago, both recently home from an earlier war, as the invasion begins. The team frames it as an origin story about the two soldiers' brotherhood, with a noticeably darker, more horror-leaning tone than the later games.

It is built in Unreal Engine 5 by The Coalition, with People Can Fly as co-developer, the studio that previously co-developed Gears of War: Judgment, and published by Xbox Game Studios.

Platforms: Xbox and PC, day one on Game Pass, no PlayStation

E-Day launches on Xbox Series X and S and on PC, and the PC release includes both the Microsoft Store and Steam. It is day one on Game Pass (Ultimate and PC Game Pass), and it supports Xbox Play Anywhere, so a single purchase carries your progress across Xbox and PC. There is no PlayStation 5 version announced.

Editions and prices

Three editions, and the early-access split is the thing to watch:

  • Standard, $69.99: the base game, launching 6 October.
  • Premium, $99.99 (or a $30 upgrade if you already own Standard): adds up to five days of early access from 1 October, a signature weapon pack, 1,000 units of in-game currency, and five seasonal customisation packs.
  • Collector's, $299.99: a physical set with a 15-inch Marcus-and-Dom diorama, a metal replica of Carlos Santiago's COG tags, a lithograph and a custom SteelBook, and it includes the full Premium digital upgrade (so Collector's buyers also get the early access).

Only Premium and Collector's get the early start on 1 October; Standard players begin on the 6th. Every edition's pre-order comes with the Exfil Dom character skin and a matching weapon set.

What the beta showed

E-Day ran a public beta across two August weekends (6 to 10 and 13 to 17), the same content each time, gated to pre-order and Game Pass players in the first weekend and open to everyone in the second. It featured two modes: a refined 4v4 Versus, and the star of the show, Horde Siege.

Horde Siege is the evolution of Gears' beloved co-op survival mode, expanded to 12 players across larger maps with overlapping objectives, and by most accounts it was the standout. Early press impressions were broadly positive: the classic weight of the roadie-run and cover shooting is intact, the new movement system adds welcome verticality, and Horde Siege drew the lion's share of play time in the beta. The usual caveat for a beta applies, some long-time fans were cautious about the new movement, and final maps and balance can shift before launch, but the foundations landed well.

Should you wait for launch?

If you have Game Pass, E-Day costs you nothing extra on 6 October, which makes it an easy one to simply try. If you want to play early, the maths is straightforward: the Premium edition or the $30 upgrade buys you the 1 October head start and a bundle of cosmetics. Only the Collector's edition is a true collector's item, and at $299.99 it is squarely for the faithful. With the beta suggesting Horde Siege is the real draw, this is one to line up co-op partners for. For more, see the Gaming section and our roundup of the biggest games of 2026 and 2027.
