Flying taxis in 2026: what's real, what's flying, and what's still hype
The air taxi finally exists, carries paying passengers, and is nothing like the flying car you were promised. The first rides are launching in Dubai and China, not America, they still need a human pilot, and two of Europe's biggest names went bankrupt getting here. The honest state of eVTOL.

Flying taxis are real in 2026, and for the first time they are about to carry fare-paying passengers, just not where or how the hype promised. The first commercial services are launching in the Gulf and China, led by Joby in Dubai and Archer in Abu Dhabi, while no aircraft has full US approval yet. They are small, electric, piloted, short-range and expensive, closer to a quiet electric helicopter than a self-driving car for the sky. And two of Europe's best-funded contenders, Lilium and Volocopter, went bankrupt getting this far.
For twenty years the "flying car" has been shorthand for a future that never arrives. In 2026 something genuinely changed: real electric aircraft, built by real companies with billions in funding, are days or months from carrying their first paying passengers. But the thing that is arriving is far narrower than the pitch, and keeping the two apart is the only honest way to tell this story.
Are flying taxis actually real in 2026?
Yes, and this is not a render or a promise. The machines are called eVTOLs, electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft: battery-powered, with multiple rotors that let them lift straight up like a helicopter and then fly forward like a plane. They are quiet compared with a helicopter, they carry a handful of people, and several have now flown thousands of test flights. The leading ones are inches from commercial service.
What they are not is the flying car of the imagination. You will not own one, it will not land in your garden, and in almost every case it still has a human pilot up front. Think airport shuttle, not personal spaceship, and the picture snaps into focus.
So can I actually book a flying taxi?
Very soon, and the surprise is where. The first real commercial air-taxi services are launching not in Silicon Valley but in the Gulf and China.
- Dubai is first out of the West's stable. Joby Aviation holds a six-year exclusive deal with Dubai's Road and Transport Authority, has built its first vertiport at Dubai International airport, and is targeting a 2026 launch of fare-paying flights across the city.
- Abu Dhabi is close behind, where Archer Aviation entered the UAE regulator's restricted-type-certificate programme in 2026 and is aiming for commercial service later in the year.
- China is arguably already there. EHang has been flying its small, pilotless EH216-S on short tourism and sightseeing hops since 2025, having become the first company in the world to win a full type certificate for an eVTOL.
Notice what unites the front-runners: friendlier, faster regulators. The Gulf states and China built approval pathways that let these aircraft start flying and building a safety record while the tougher, slower American process grinds on.
Why can't I get one in America yet?
Because of the single hardest gate in this whole industry: certification. Before an aircraft can carry the public in the US, the Federal Aviation Administration has to grant it a type certificate, proving it is safe across every condition, and as of 2026 no US eVTOL has one.
The progress is real. Joby has cleared the fourth of the FAA's five certification stages and is flying production-standard aircraft, and Archer says it was first to close Phase 3 of the process. But the final stage, FAA-supervised compliance flight testing, still lies ahead for both, and a US type certificate is not expected before 2027 at the earliest, and sober analysts put realistic dates further out still. To bridge the gap, the FAA created a powered-lift category in October 2024, the first new class of civil aircraft in nearly eighty years, and has begun opening limited pathways for early operations. But the honest headline is that the country that invented these companies will not be first to fly them commercially.
Who is actually leading the race?
Three names matter most, and they are pursuing the same goal in strikingly different ways.
- Joby is the best-funded and, on paper, the furthest along. Its S4 carries four passengers plus a pilot, flies up to 150 miles at up to 200 mph, and the company is backed by a $500 million investment from Toyota (part of nearly $900 million the carmaker has now committed), which is helping it build the aircraft at scale. Dubai is its launch market.
- Archer is the closest rival. Its Midnight aircraft also carries four passengers plus a pilot, over a shorter 100-mile range at 150 mph, and is optimised for quick, back-to-back city hops. Archer has lined up Abu Dhabi, a US route network with United Airlines, and the plum job of official air-taxi provider for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
- EHang is the outlier and, in one sense, the leader. Its EH216-S is a small two-seater with no pilot at all, flown entirely autonomously. It holds the world's first eVTOL type certificate and is already flying paying passengers in China. The catch: it is a short-range sightseeing pod, not an intercity transport.
The reality check: the graveyard
Here is the part the promotional videos skip. This industry is brutally expensive, and it has already claimed two of its most celebrated names.
Lilium, a German company that raised well over a billion dollars to build a sleek, jet-like air taxi, ran out of money in late 2024, saw a rescue deal collapse, filed for insolvency a second time in February 2025, and halted operations. Volocopter, another German pioneer that flew demonstration flights for years and once aimed to launch at the 2024 Paris Olympics, filed for insolvency in December 2024. It survived only by being bought out of bankruptcy by China's Wanfeng group (owner of Diamond Aircraft) for around eleven million dollars, a fire-sale price that kept roughly 180 of its 500 staff.
The lesson is not that flying taxis are fake. It is that they are a capital-devouring bet where being technically brilliant is not enough to survive, and even the leaders are burning enormous sums with revenue barely started.

What can they actually do, and what can't they?
Strip away the marketing and the honest capabilities are modest but real.
They can fly a few people between two fixed points, an airport and a city centre, say, in a fraction of the road-traffic time, quietly and with zero direct emissions. That is a genuinely useful thing, and in a congested megacity it could be transformative.
What they cannot do, yet, is almost everything the fantasy implies. They are not autonomous (bar EHang's short tourist hops), so every flight needs a trained pilot, which caps how cheap and how scalable they can be. Their range is short, so this is city-and-suburb hopping, not cross-country travel. They need vertiports, dedicated landing pads with chargers, so they only go where that infrastructure is built. They are weather-limited and, at first, expensive, a premium service for people who would otherwise take a helicopter or a pricey car, not a replacement for your morning commute. The dream of a personal flying car that lands on your roof is not this, and is not close.
So when do flying taxis actually arrive?
They are arriving right now, in the narrowest possible form: a handful of piloted, premium, short-range shuttles in a few forward-leaning cities, with the Gulf and China ahead of the United States. That is a real milestone, and anyone who lived through a decade of empty "next year" promises should not wave it away.
But the version that matters to most people, cheap, autonomous, everywhere, turning your commute into a five-minute flight, is a different and much more distant thing. It depends on autonomy that is years from approval, costs that are years from falling, and infrastructure that is barely begun. Flying taxis in 2026 are real and they are impressive. They are also small, scarce, piloted and pricey, and pretending otherwise is how you end up like Lilium.
