Starship Flight 14 is the one that is supposed to reach orbit and make money, if it flies
SpaceX has filed for Starship's first flight to attempt orbit, carrying about 20 operational Starlink V3 satellites; its CFO calls it the programme's first revenue flight. As of this writing it has not launched, the FAA licence is still outstanding, and the ship is still planned to splash down rather than be caught. Here is the honest picture of what Flight 14 is, and is not.

SpaceX is preparing Starship Flight 14, the first flight it has filed to attempt orbit and, in its CFO's words, its first revenue-generating mission: a batch of about 20 operational Starlink V3 satellites. As of this writing the rocket has not flown, the FAA launch licence is still outstanding, and the current target is no earlier than 18 September 2026. Both the booster and the ship are planned to splash down, not be caught. Here is what is genuinely new, and what the hype overstates.
Every Starship flight for the last two years has been a rehearsal. Flight 13, back in July, finally did something close to the real job: it opened its bay, released a batch of next-generation Starlink satellites and flew the softest landing the vehicle has ever managed, while quietly staying suborbital and losing its booster. Flight 14 is meant to close that last gap. SpaceX has filed paperwork describing it as the first Starship flight meant to reach orbit rather than fly a suborbital arc, and its own finance chief has started calling it the moment the rocket begins paying for itself. That is a genuinely big step. It is also, as of this writing, a flight that has not happened yet and still needs a licence. Here is the clear-eyed version.
What is Flight 14 trying to do?
Three things at once. Reach orbit for the first time, deploy a live commercial payload of roughly 20 Starlink V3 satellites into operational service, and bring both stages down under control. SpaceX's FCC filing is described as the first to put "an orbital second stage" on the record, the paperwork behind what Elon Musk and outlets have called an orbital-insertion attempt. Every previous Starship flew a suborbital arc by design. This is the attempt to change that.
Has it actually launched yet?
No, and that caveat is load-bearing. As of this writing the flight has not flown and the FAA has not issued a launch licence. The most recent launch advisories point to a target no earlier than 18 September 2026, in a two-hour window from Starbase in Texas, with the 19th as a backup, but the date has already drifted once from an earlier 15 September target. The FAA completed only the environmental step, a Finding of No Significant Impact issued around 3 September. An agency spokesperson was explicit that "the completion of the environmental process does not guarantee that the FAA will issue a launch license," and that SpaceX still has to clear safety, risk and financial-responsibility requirements. So treat the date as a target, not a fact, and check SpaceX's own channels on the morning of any launch.
Why does the word "orbital" matter so much here?
Because it is the difference between a rehearsal and the job. On Flight 13, the satellites rode the same falling trajectory as the ship and were expected to reenter and burn up within about 20 minutes. It was a deployment demonstration, not a delivery. Flight 14 is filed to reach true orbital velocity and leave its satellites in operational orbit.
One nuance keeps the hype honest, though. Reaching orbit to release the payload is the goal, but the ship itself is not meant to stay up there. It is planned to perform a controlled deorbit to a splashdown in the Indian Ocean. So the satellites are meant to go to orbit; the vehicle flies an orbital-insertion-then-controlled-return profile. "First orbital attempt" is the accurate framing, and SpaceX's guides themselves call the orbital milestone an objective rather than a guaranteed outcome.
What is the payload, and why does it need Starship?
The batch is roughly 20 Starlink V3 satellites, the largest and highest-capacity generation SpaceX has built. By the company's own stated design figures, each V3 carries around 1 Tbps of downlink and 160 Gbps of uplink, which it describes as "more than 10x the downlink and 24x the uplink capacity" of today's V2 Mini satellites. Those numbers are SpaceX's design claims, not throughput confirmed on orbit, so read them as specifications.
The size is the point. V3 satellites are far heavier and larger, reported at about 1,900 kg each, more than three times a V2 Mini. SpaceX says they are too large and heavy for the workhorse Falcon 9 and need Starship, the most powerful rocket it flies. A full Starship batch is designed to be 60 of them, about 60 Tbps of capacity per launch. In other words, this new class of satellite essentially cannot fly without Starship, which is exactly why getting the rocket operational matters to the wider Starlink business.
Why is the CFO calling it the first revenue flight?
Because if the satellites reach operational orbit, this stops being a test and starts being a delivery SpaceX can book. At the Goldman Sachs Communacopia and Technology Conference on 10 September, SpaceX CFO Bret Johnsen said Flight 14 "is going to be a revenue-generating flight," adding that he was "excited that we're moving into production cadence and flying production V3 Starlink satellites to orbit on our next flight."
Worth being precise: "first commercial," "first revenue" and "first commercially productive" are SpaceX's own framing, attributable to Johnsen, not neutral facts. They are a reasonable description if the flight succeeds, and marketing if it slips again. Attribute them, and wait for the outcome.
So will they catch anything with the tower?
Not this time. Despite headlines that blurred the environmental clearance into an approved "catch," both stages are planned to splash down. The Super Heavy booster is set for a controlled splashdown at sea, and the ship for a splashdown in the Indian Ocean. The dramatic tower "chopsticks" catch of the ship that SpaceX had floated for this flight has been deferred, reportedly by a few months. The FAA also said plainly that it had "not approved the reentry and landing catch." Full, rapid reuse of both stages, the thing that would make Starship genuinely cheap, is still ahead.
