Smart glasses in 2026: what they can actually do, and what is still hype
Meta put a display and a mind-reading wristband on your face, and suddenly smart glasses feel like the future. They are genuinely useful now. They are also not the augmented reality you are picturing, and the gap between the two is the whole story.

Smart glasses got real in 2025, led by Meta's Ray-Ban line: a camera, open-ear audio and an AI assistant on your face, and, in the $799 Ray-Ban Display, a small in-lens screen controlled by a wristband that reads your muscle signals. They are genuinely useful. But they are AI-and-camera glasses, not the sci-fi augmented reality that paints holograms onto the world. That version exists only as a $10,000-plus Meta prototype called Orion, and it is years from your face. Know which one you are buying.
For a decade "smart glasses" meant either a clumsy failure (Google Glass) or a promise that never shipped. In 2025 that changed. Meta's Ray-Ban glasses became a genuine hit, and its new Ray-Ban Display put an actual screen in the lens. Google, Apple and Samsung all piled in. So the future finally arrived, except the thing that arrived is not quite the thing people imagine when they hear "AR glasses." Here is the honest state of it.
Are smart glasses actually good now?
Yes, with a caveat you need up front. The glasses you can buy today are, at heart, a camera, a speaker and an AI assistant that live on your face. For that, they are genuinely good, good enough that Meta's Ray-Ban line is the first smart eyewear to sell in real numbers. What they are not, yet, is augmented reality in the way films have trained you to expect. Keep those two ideas separate and everything else makes sense.
What can smart glasses actually do in 2026?
More than you would think, and less than the marketing implies. The core features across the mainstream models:
- Capture hands-free. A camera in the frame shoots photos and video (the latest Ray-Ban Meta records in 3K) from your exact point of view, which is the feature people actually use most.
- Audio in your ears. Open-ear speakers play music, podcasts and calls without blocking the world around you, like discreet earphones built into the arms.
- An AI assistant that can see. This is the real leap. You can ask the built-in assistant about what you are looking at, "what is this building", "translate that menu", and it answers through the speakers. Live translation, in particular, feels genuinely futuristic.
- Messages and calls, read aloud or, on the display model, shown to you.
The big 2025 addition is a display. Meta's Ray-Ban Display puts a small, full-colour screen in the right lens: not a world of floating holograms, but a glanceable heads-up panel for messages, walking directions, a camera viewfinder and the AI's replies. You control it with the bundled Neural Band, a wristband that reads the faint electrical signals from your hand muscles, so a tiny finger pinch scrolls and selects. It sounds like science fiction and it mostly works, which is the genuinely exciting part.
The limits are real too. Battery life is short, roughly six hours of mixed use on the Display model. The screen is small, single-eye and made for glances, not immersion. And a camera on your face raises obvious privacy questions for everyone around you.
The devices worth knowing
The field sorted itself into a clear ladder in 2025 and 2026.
- Ray-Ban Meta (Gen 2), from $379. The mainstream pick: camera, audio and Meta AI, no display. If you want to try smart glasses, this is the sweet spot, normal-looking glasses that happen to be smart.
- Oakley Meta Vanguard, from $499. The same idea in a wrap-around sports frame, sweat- and weather-resistant, aimed at runners and cyclists.
- Ray-Ban Display, $799. The flagship and the glimpse of the future: the in-lens screen plus the Neural Band. The most advanced thing you can actually buy, and the priciest.
- Google's Gemini glasses. First unveiled at Google I/O 2025 (and shown again at I/O 2026), built with Samsung, Warby Parker and Gentle Monster, these run Android XR with Google's Gemini AI. Audio-only models arrive first in late 2026, with display versions to follow.
- Samsung's Android XR glasses. Separately from its headset below, Samsung used its July 2026 Galaxy Unpacked to reveal its own AI smart glasses (reported name "Intelligent Eyewear"), built with Google on Android XR and shown in Gentle Monster and Warby Parker frames, with the first versions due "this fall." Pricing was not confirmed (leaks suggest roughly $379 to $499).
- Apple's glasses. Not out. Apple is now reported (Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, July 2026) to reveal camera-and-AI glasses at WWDC 2027 and launch them by the end of 2027, with no in-lens display in the first generation, positioned as an iPhone accessory.
- Samsung Galaxy XR, $1,799. Worth a mention to rule it out: this is a full headset, a rival to Apple's Vision Pro, not glasses. Different product, different use.

So where is the real augmented reality?
This is the part worth being blunt about. The dream, digital objects anchored in your real room, a virtual screen on your wall, directions painted onto the street, is true augmented reality, and you cannot buy it. What you can buy is AI glasses with, at most, a small heads-up display in one eye.
The most advanced true-AR glasses that exist are Meta's Orion prototype, and they are genuinely remarkable: a roughly 70-degree field of view of real holograms in a frame weighing under 100 grams. But Meta has been clear that Orion is not a product. Only around a thousand were built, for demos and developers, and Meta says building one to sell would cost on the order of $10,000 because the optics simply cannot be manufactured affordably yet. Its first true-AR glasses that people can actually buy are reportedly still years away, likely 2027 at the earliest and probably later.
So the honest map is this: AI glasses are here and good; a small display is here and promising; real AR is a prototype in a lab. Anyone selling you "AR glasses" today is, almost always, selling you the first two.
Should you buy a pair?
If what you want is a hands-free camera, music in your ears and an AI you can ask about the world in front of you, then yes, and the Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 at $379 is the place to start. If you specifically want the heads-up display and the neural wristband, and you can stomach $799 and short battery life, the Ray-Ban Display is a real look at where this is going.
But if you are holding out for the version that overlays your whole world with holograms, keep holding. That is not what is in the shops, no matter what the box says, and it will not be for a while yet.
